Gaze-controlled underground analysis - TotalEnergies

To support its experts in geoseismic analysis, TotalEnergies develops and maintains SISMage-CIG, a software suite covering various geosciences disciplines. We were asked to explore the integration of eye-tracking within SISMage-CIG to facilitate the work of the experts and improve their comfort.

Interpreting 3D subsurface data with eye-tracking

TotalEnergies develops and maintains an in-house software suite for seismic interpretation of the subsurface: SISMage-CIG.

Performed by expert geologists, this seismic interpretation involves extracting key surfaces from very large three-dimensional data sets of the earth's crust. The automatic extraction of these surfaces is completed by manual editing, a tedious and repetitive step.

Eye-tracking allows knowing where the attention zone of a user is. It is a valuable tool to improve the experience and comfort of experts in the data interpretation process. Automatic pointing, adaptive interfaces, prevention of eye fatigue... Eye tracking offers many possibilities to assist geologists in their daily work.

Immersalis' role in the project

The seismic interpretation system SISMAGE-CIG (TM), developed by TotalEnergies, is based on a specific architecture, far from the recommendations provided by eye-tracker manufacturers. The challenge for Immersalis was to validate the integration and use of eye-tracking on a distributed architecture, on dual screen configurations and with large screens.

This project was the subject of a scientific publication in the framework of the Ergo'AI 2021 conference: link to the open access article on HAL

The 3 challenges we successfully met

Immersalis-capsule-3-eye-tracking

Integrating eye-tracking into a distributed architecture

Our eyes move extremely fast. Using eye-tracking in a distributed configuration therefore poses a problem of delay between the capture of the gaze and the reaction by the server. We have developed a program to use an eye-tracker in a network and validated its usability in terms of transmission time.

Dual eye tracker configuration

Two eye-trackers facing the same user interfere with each other. We have therefore developed a solution that allows you to quickly switch from one eye-tracker to another and thus maintain eye-tracking capabilities even in a dual screen configuration.

System validation on large screens

An eye-tracker is only able to track on screens up to a certain size. We have conducted a user experiment to validate the use of Tobii 4C eye-tracker on 32 inches screens, beyond the manufacturer's recommended size.
