Collaborative seismic model analysis using virtual reality

Interpreting geoseismic data is a long and tedious task. Developed at TotalEnergies, SISMage-CIG is a complete software suite for conducting 3D interpretations of the underground. This task is mainly a collaborative one; but as of today, experts must gather in front of 2D-screens to interpret 3D data.

Virtual reality offers a new way of visualising and understanding three-dimensional data. Immersed in the heart of 3D models, experts can find new angles of interpretation.

Immersalis was asked to imagine and develop a collaborative virtual reality tool, allowing business experts to easily work on 3D models of the earth's crust.

Immersalis' role in the project

The TotalEnergies Sismage-CIG Innovation cell reached to us in order to design and develop a collaborative virtual reality tool for the visualization and manipulation of geo-seismic data. The objective is to gather business experts around an easy-to-use tool, while offering them a new perspective on the data they manipulate every day.

We adopted an iterative approach that enabled us to progressively extend the software's capabilities, while finalizing the chosen interactions and user experience at each stage. Frequent customer and user feedback has enabled us to deliver a solution that is easy to access, allowing business experts to immerse themselves seamlessly in this virtual universe and work together.

 A scientific paper is being published for the ErgoIA2023 conference.

The 3 challenges we successfully met

Bringing virtual reality to SISMage-CIG data

The objective of our tool is to allow the interpretation of field data from SISMage-CIG. As such, Sismage-VR can import 3D models from Sismage-CIG. The different geological elements are differentiated and can be activated or hidden simply by pressing a button.

UX design for immediate effectiveness

We have taken particular care to build a user experience that is immediately accessible to anyone who has no experience with virtual reality. In just a few minutes, we bring together experts, managers, and decision makers as they can manipulate, transform, activate or deactivate 3D models or geological information to concentrate fully on their analysis task.

Remote collaborative mode

SISMage-VR offers a collaborative mode for the analysis of 3D terrain models. Up to four users can work together in the virtual world, whether they are in the same room or hundreds of miles away.
